THE BACKSTORY

It was ninety-five degrees with about the same humidity, a typical late summer night in Chicago. I had just left a Clarence Clemons concert where he played his sax that night like a three-diesel train.

I walked under an overpass to catch the El to my apartment. Under the train's overpass was a Hispanic teenage couple, dancing to the music coming off their boombox. They both had beautiful, light almond, perspiring skin that reflected the underpass's dim yellow lights. The girl had long, straight brown hair that drifted down her back. She wore short dark green shorts that exposed just a smidge of ass cheek, a tight, light-yellow T-shirt that clung to every curve of her body, a thin gold necklace, and tan sandals. The boy was about four inches taller than she was. He had short, curly black hair, wore black jeans, a black wife-beater T-shirt that showed wiry, muscular arms with tattoos, and a small diamond earring.

They slowly swayed to the music, holding tightly to each other. He had his hands around her lower back; she had her arms around his neck and her head against his chest. There was no air between them. They were oblivious to the heat and humidity, the people around them, the vehicle exhaust, and the noise. They shared this intimate dance in the aura of Chicago grit, finding it to be one of the most romantic and passionate moments I had ever witnessed.
